2008 Westmoreland Bar Association Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Seminar Schedule


The WBA is an accredited provider for the Pennsylvania Board of Continuing Legal Education. All seminars will be held at the Bar Association Headquarters unless otherwise noted. 2008 CLE Costs

The cost to attend Continuing Legal Education seminars at the Westmoreland Bar Association will increase effective January 1, 2008. WBA members who preregister and prepay for classes will receive a discount of $10 per credit hour as compared to those who walk in on the day of the seminar. Those who do not prepay at least 24 hours in advance will be charged the walk-in fee. Attendees who do not want CLE credit will pay a flat fee; the non-credit fee is waived for Young Lawyers who have been in practice 10 years or less.

Preregistration Fees (MUST BE PREPAID AT LEAST 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE)

CLE Credit:

  • WBA Members: $30 per credit hour
  • Non-Members: $50 per credit hour

Non-Credit:

  • $10 flat fee (Waived for Young Lawyers attending but not wanting any credit

Walk-In Fees

CLE Credit:

  • WBA Members: $40 per credit hour
  • Non-Members: $50 per credit hour

Non-Credit:

  • $20 flat fee (Waived for Young Lawyers attending but not wanting any credit

A LIVE CLE Lunch 'n Learn Event: "Social Security Issues for the Family Lawyer"

Presenter: Barbara J. Artuso, Esquire

This program will explain the various benefit programs supported by the Social Security Administration, and the impact receipt of those benefits may have on divorce and support litigation.

Topics of discussion:

  • Social Security Disability Insurance
  • Supplemental Security Income
  • Social Security Retirement and Survivors' Benefits

A LIVE CLE Lunch 'n Learn Event: "Medicaid Annuities and How to Use Them"

Presenter: Andrew G. Sykes, Esq., Sykes Elder Law, LLC

Learn how to help Medicaid clients through the proper use of annuities. Find out the latest on Pennsylvania's implementation of the Deficit Reduction Act, recent case law, and Pennsylvania's claims procedures. Work through some examples to see how you can use DRA-qualified annuities to benefit your clients.

Brief description of topics:

  • Federal and Pennsylvania law on Medicaid annuities
  • Requirements of DRA-qualified annuity
  • Avoiding common mistakes
  • Annuities for the married applicant
  • Annuities for the single or widowed applicant

If special arrangements are needed for the physically challenged, contact the Bar office at 724.834.6730 at least two weeks before the date of the seminar.

Refund Policy: Cancellations minus an administrative fee will be refunded if written notice is received three days prior to the seminar.

Attendees must sign in at the beginning of each session and must sign out when leaving the room in order to receive full credit.

"Walk-ins," those who have not preregistered with the WBA at least one week before the seminar, may attend the seminar but will only receive materials that day while supplies last. Written materials will be made available at a later date.
