The Westmoreland Bar Foundation recently named John M O’Connell, Jr., a partner with the law firm of O’Connell and Silvis, the 2014 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. This award is given to the attorney who has provided note-worthy volunteer legal representation of indigent Westmoreland County residents.

Attorney O’Connell has been a Pro Bono volunteer since 2008. He has concentrated his volunteer hours in landlord/tenant issues. Many of Mr. O’Connell’s representation saved clients from losing their housing.

Recently-retired President Judge Gary Caruso made the award presentation at the annual meeting of the Westmoreland Bar Foundation. He detailed Attorney O’Connell’s dedication to his clients and indicated that Mr. O’Connell epitomizes the “gentleman” lawyer, always being well-prepared and dedicated to his clients' interests.

Attorney O’Connell is past president of the Westmoreland Bar Association and received the Professionalism Award in 2002, the highest honor of the local bar.

The Pro Bono program of Westmoreland County provides free legal representation to those who qualify according to income guidelines and case merit. This past year the members of the Westmoreland Bar Association volunteered their time to represent over 500 individuals on civil matters.
