How does the Lawyer Referral Service of the Westmoreland Bar Association work?
The Lawyer Referral Service of the Westmoreland Bar Association is a public service provided by the Westmoreland Bar Association. We make referrals to private lawyers or other community resources specializing in the area(s) of law related to your specific situation.
If you have a legal problem, or think you might need a lawyer, contact us, and we will put you in touch with the appropriate resource.
After completing our intake form either over the phone or online, your information will be sent to the attorney's office. They will reach out within one to two business days to arrange for a free initial consultation that will last no more than 30 minutes. After the consultation, the attorney will decide if they can represent or assist you. We cannot guarantee that an attorney will take your case; this is a decision for the attorney to make.
If the attorney is able to represent you, the attorney will discuss their fee schedule with you. Most attorneys charge an hourly rate for their time. A typical hourly rate will range between $300 to $500 per hour. Some attorneys also charge a retainer fee that can range between $3,000 to $5,000.
What are your hours?
Our normal business hours are from 9 am – 4 pm, Monday through Thursday and 9 am – 3 pm on Friday. Our office is closed on all major holidays.
You can also obtain a lawyer through our online service, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Why should I use your service instead of looking in a phone book or searching online?
The attorneys in our service have been screened before becoming members of the service, and meet experience requirements in order to receive referrals in each area of law. All of our attorneys have certified that they carry malpractice insurance and we check to make sure all of the attorneys are in good standing with the Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court. In addition, our staff monitors attorney professionalism through client feedback.
Can you answer my legal question?
No. The Lawyer Referral Service staff are not attorneys, and are not able to answer any legal questions or provide legal advice. However, we will try to assist you in any other way possible by either referring you to an attorney or providing you with additional resources.
Will I be guaranteed that a lawyer will take my case?
No, you will not be guaranteed that a lawyer will take your case. The payment of the $35 administrative fee guarantees you an initial phone consultation with an experienced lawyer for up to 30 minutes. The lawyer will use this time to find out more about your legal issue to see if they can assist you. If you and the lawyer agree to work together, the lawyer will discuss their fees and ask you to sign an agreement.
Is the $35 administrative fee refundable?
No, the $35 administrative fee is not refundable. Your credit card will only be charged if a lawyer is available to provide you with an initial consultation (that will last no more than 30 minutes). If a lawyer is not available to speak with you, your credit card will not be charged. If for some reason your credit card is charged and an attorney is not available to speak with you, you will be provided with a refund.
I need free legal help. Can you help me?
No, unfortunately none of the attorneys in our Lawyer Referral Service provide free legal services at this time.
